“The only thing that let us down was the weather but that didn’t dampen the children’s spirits. There were lots of laughs and giggles, despite getting soaked!” – siblings enjoy bug hunting and birdwatching during a trip to Orford Ness

Youngsters enjoyed learning about bugs, birds and wildlife while visiting a popular nature reserve.

The half-term trip to Orford Ness was organised by East Anglia’s Children’s Hospices (EACH) for siblings being supported at The Treehouse, in Ipswich.

They were either bereaved or those with a brother or sister receiving care.

Sixteen youngsters between the ages of five and 14 took part and enjoyed completing a range of tasks, while learning more from National Trust Rangers.

“It was a fascinating day and everyone enjoyed it very much,” said EACH Play Specialist Hailey Allen.

“Our day started with a coach trip – a first for one of our sibling days – and then a short boat crossing to Orford Ness.

“The only thing that let us down was the weather but that didn’t dampen the children’s spirits. There were lots of laughs and giggles, despite getting soaked!

“When we were there, we enjoyed exploring Orford Ness, including taking part in various activities organised by the National Trust Rangers.

“These included bug hunting, checking moth traps and even dissecting owl pellets. It was very interesting.”

The group also enjoyed visiting a viewing point to do a spot of bird watching.

“The Rangers were brilliant and explained so much about the nature and environment around us,” added Hailey.

“All the children left with a goody bag and Young Ranger badge, which was a lovely memento of a very special day.”

EACH runs sibling days during the school holidays, for children aged five and upwards.

It allows them to come together, have fun and make friends in a safe environment.
