Symptom management nursing service (SMNS)

Children with life-threatening conditions can experience complex symptoms. Our symptom management nursing service (SMNS) aims to improve the quality of life of those in our care.

We work closely with families to assess a symptom before developing an appropriate and individualised management plan. Our SMNS team provides specialist nursing care, advice and support 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, wherever the child is being cared for.

What families say

“I wonder how we ever managed before we had a symptom management nurse! Having someone join 'Team William' who has the time and specialist knowledge to support us, and who is connected with our other specialists has been so helpful. It has taken a lot of pressure off us as parents, has made us feel more supported and less worried for the future, and given us a safety net for when things suddenly get a bit overwhelming.”

“Using EACH allowed us to spend much quality time together as a family in Finnbar's last couple of months. All the support we were given was so important to us. The journey was difficult and fast-paced, having the symptom management nursing service was very important. They were able to fight our corner at a time when we were becoming exhausted.”

“The EACH symptom management nursing service were a great support to us on our journey. They would be completely honest with us about what was happening, or about to happen. They helped us to create an end of life plan that we felt comfortable implementing when the time came, enabling us to have a choice of where Effie was to spend her final days, which was very important to us. Without their team we would have spent so much more of the little time we had with Effie stuck in hospital.”
