“It was a brilliant evening of music, creativity and inclusivity, and they should be incredibly proud of what they achieved” – families enjoy a colours-themed music night thanks to students from Suffolk One

Students showed their creativity after organising a vibrant colours-themed music night for families receiving support from East Anglia’s Children’s Hospices (EACH).

The interactive evening, held at The Treehouse, was a celebration designed and delivered by music students from Suffolk One.

The event formed part of a collaboration between the college and EACH, which began when Music Therapist Ray Travasso visited Suffolk One.

He was able to tell students about music therapy, hospice care and the charity’s work supporting children and young people across East Anglia.

Students then visited The Treehouse to experience its Country and Western-themed Hoedown, in September.

They were then challenged to create an event of their own.

Given a blank canvas, they chose a colours theme, organised decorations and resources, planned the evening and selected a programme of songs including Mr Blue Sky, Black Magic, What a Wonderful World and Yellow.

One student also created an acrylic painting throughout the evening, using music as inspiration, while families enjoyed a range of sensory activities including glow sticks and colourful flags.

Eight families attended, including several visiting for the first time.

Ray said: “The students absolutely smashed it.

“It was a brilliant evening of music, creativity and inclusivity, and they should be incredibly proud of what they achieved.

“They took ownership of every aspect of the event, from choosing the theme and music to creating sensory activities and decorations. They played brilliantly together as a group and engaged so warmly with the children and families.

“It was particularly lovely to welcome some families who were attending for the first time. The students were professional throughout but also incredibly kind, encouraging the children to join in, dance, play and have fun.

“The support of our volunteers and staff also helped make the hospice bright, colourful and welcoming. It was a special collaboration and we’re already looking forward to the next one.”
