A mum whose eight-year-old son received end-of-life care from East Anglia’s Children’s Hospices (EACH) provided words of inspiration before officially starting the charity’s Pier 2 Pier Norfolk fundraiser.
Kyra Welch, who was joined by husband Jordan and daughter Rosalie, set walkers on their way at the beginning of Saturday’s 32-mile trek.
More than 80 people then made their way along the coastal path from Cromer to Great Yarmouth – collectively raising £36,455.
Kyra, who continues to receive bereavement support from EACH, spoke to participants before they started their mission and then she and Rosalie did a 3-2-1 countdown.
Son Kaiden was diagnosed with a congenital heart defect and had open-heart surgery just three days after being born. He defied the odds to live until he was eight but died in October 2021.
“Kyra said some beautiful words,” said EACH Events Fundraiser Ellie Nevard.
“It was an amazing, emotional moment and so inspiring and motivational for the walkers to hear more about the support EACH provides.
“Her words gave real meaning to what they were about to embark on, and it meant so much to us all that she could be there.
“Kaiden’s photo also appeared on signage along the route, so it’s great he could be part of the day.”
The walkers endured miserable conditions but kept smiling and were rewarded with fish and chips after arriving at their destination.
“The weather was horrendous once again, with strong winds and sideways rain,” added Ellie.
“Completing such a huge challenge is impressive enough, but to do it in cold clothes, when soaked to the bone, takes their dedication to another level.
“Everyone got in the spirit and embraced the walk with a smile on their face, and they’re amazing people. They should be extremely pleased and proud of themselves.
“Money is still coming in from people’s individual fundraising, but the current total stands at £36,455.
“We’re thrilled because it’s an enormous amount of money that will make such a difference to our vital work.”
Ellie said she was grateful to event sponsors Bateman Groundworks, in addition to all the volunteers who gave their time to ensure the smooth-running of the day.
Among them was another bereaved mum, Melanie Kershaw, whose 12-year-old son, Rhys, had Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma and died at The Nook in July 2022.
“Melanie’s a lovely lady and volunteered her time to cheer on and congratulate the walkers,” said Ellie.
“It meant everyone met bereaved mums at the start and finish of the event, providing real symmetry and such a poignant reminder of why fundraising days like this are so important.”
The next big event in EACH’s events diary is The Piglet, Junior Hog – a fun-filled family day featuring obstacles, water and mud and taking place near Woodbridge on 12th July.
Pier 2 Pier Suffolk – a 16-mile walk from Lowestoft to Southwold – then follows on 12th September. It is once again being accompanied by a family-friendly Mini Pier 2 Pier event, featuring a 3.5-mile walk around Southwold.
