Kind-hearted residents inspired by a creative 98-year-old proved a tight-knit community after joining forces to raise funds for East Anglia’s Children’s Hospices (EACH).
The group, from Felbrigg Green, in Norwich, organised a fundraising coffee morning and raffle and raised just over £500.
They were spearheaded by 98-year-old Ilse Gehre, who had spent the previous ten months knitting items to be sold on the day.
Far from spinning a yarn, the day proved a huge success, with residents, friends and family coming together to show their support.
“It was a wonderful day, full of kindness and community spirit,” said organiser Linda Folger.
“Everyone was very generous, but the star of the show was Ilse.
“She’s an absolute star – so clever, as bright as a button and a real inspiration.
“If she’s not out and about, she’s busy knitting, and the items she created were beautiful.
“People baked cakes and sausage rolls, and we were fortunate to have so many fantastic raffle prizes, including day passes, stress balls and pens donated by Nuffield Health.
“We were also given car cleaning kits by the Holden Group and a tool kit by Richardsons of Norwich.
“Residents, family and friends gave us lots of other prizes and things to sell, including some beautiful pens and letter openers created by woodturner Steve Fisher.”
Around 30 people came along for the fundraising day on 1st October, and Linda and Ilse recently presented a cheque to EACH Community Fundraisers Natasha Butler and Cassie Hollis.
“We enjoy doing these things and it was lovely to support EACH,” added Linda.
“No-one has a personal connection, but we were keen to support a local charity and one that does such amazing work across our community.”
Felbrigg Green is a housing complex for over-55s, in Hellesdon.
The residents have a communal lounge and kitchen where they regularly meet for coffee mornings, fish and chip nights and other social get-togethers.
“What a wonderful group of residents,” said Natasha.
“It was lovely to meet them and have an opportunity to tell them a bit more about EACH.
“They felt even more pleased with themselves after we’d explained what we do and how their donation will help.
“We spent an hour and a half with them, and they made us feel so welcome. The sense of community, fun and support for each other was incredible.”
