Eco-conscious shop customers have the chance to glean extra information about their collective efforts to save the planet.
East Anglia’s Children’s Hospices (EACH) is expanding its Carbon Conscious campaign – an awareness initiative launched earlier this year, calculating the carbon savings for every transaction – to reveal weekly grand totals for all 54 of its shops across Cambridgeshire, Essex, Norfolk and Suffolk.
Customer display screens will now show a new, updated message, revealing the total savings made by customers during the previous week.
It will highlight the benefit of buying pre-loved donations, compared to the emissions created in manufacturing and transporting new items, while also including a waste figure, estimating the total weight of items saved from landfill.
“We were proud to launch our Carbon Conscious campaign back in April, because we all know reusing and repurposing an item is greener and more environmentally friendly,” said Genine Woodcock, EACH’s Retail Central Support Manager.
“Now we’re able to go one step further and show customers the total carbon savings made in their local shop, each and every week.
“Once again, this highlights our commitment to doing everything in our power to play our part in saving the planet.
“Tracking and reducing our carbon footprint is more important than ever and something we’re all striving to do, both as a business and individually.
“Buying pre-loved items is one way we can do that. By using items for longer, we help reduce the drain on our planet’s resources, reduce manufacturing pollution, reduce transport pollution and reduce volume going to landfill.
“That’s why it’s so important to provide customers with as much information as possible, to show how they’re helping save the planet when buying a donated item from EACH.”
Carbon emissions relates to the carbon dioxide emissions generated during the manufacture and distribution of a new product.
The information was calculated by gathering data from sources such as peer-reviewed papers, government reports and environmental consulting companies.
