“It was an amazing thing to do but very hard work and frightening. My legs were shaking like a leaf” – shop volunteer Trevor faces his fear of heights and raises funds by climbing to the top of The O2

A popular shop volunteer proved the sky’s the limit after climbing to the top of The O2 and raising nearly £2,000 for East Anglia’s Children’s Hospices (EACH).

Trevor Hewitt, 38, brushed aside his fear of heights to reach the summit of the iconic London landmark.

He took on the challenge to show his support for EACH, given that he spends three half-days a week helping in the charity’s Colchester High Street shop.

He has been volunteering there for five years and said: “It was an amazing thing to do but very hard work and frightening.

“I was so scared that my legs were shaking like a leaf.

“I did it, though, and I’m proud of myself for that. The views from the top were incredible, so it was definitely worth it.”

Trevor managed to raise more than £1,900 and recently presented a cheque to Colchester High Street Shop Manager Sammy Mauldin and Retail Area Manager Delroy Daniels.

“I was really pleased to raise as much as I did,” added the former pupil at Colchester’s Kingswode Hoe School.

“It’s a lot of money that will hopefully make a big difference to the children and families being supported by EACH.

“I’m already thinking of doing something else next year – hopefully raising funds from an abseiling challenge.”

Trevor has learning difficulties and says the shop is a place he feels both “accepted and valued”.

His O2 climb took place in July, and he was joined by fellow EACH volunteer Steve Williams. Ken Harvey, another volunteer, helped the pair with their fundraising.
