“We loved how much ownership they took of the project, how excited they were and how keen they were to raise as much as possible” – kind-hearted youngsters show their support after boogeying into action at a school danceathon

Energetic youngsters turned dancing into donations after springing into action and raising more than £800 for East Anglia’s Children’s Hospices (EACH).

Sixty children from Years One and Two took part in the danceathon at St Mary and St Peter Catholic Primary, in Gorleston, having been tasked with completing a community project as part of their Religious Education learning.

They researched various charities before deciding to support EACH. The children had to set up a fundraising event and hit on the idea of a disco, promoting it and informing parents by writing notices in the school newsletter. They danced for a solid two hours, joined by older pupils and even staff members, bopping to their own carefully selected playlist that included Taylor Swift and Disney favourites.

“The trickiest part was remembering to keep dancing between the songs,” said Year One teacher Amelia Nobes. “We were so proud of the children, and, understandably, they were exhausted afterwards. We loved how much ownership they took of the project, how excited they were and how keen they were to raise as much as possible.

“EACH won by a mile when we’d been deciding which charity to support. The children were particularly hooked by photographs of the accessible playgrounds at the hospices, and they were passionate about the idea of having a space where every child can play. They were overjoyed when we revealed the final amount raised.”

EACH Community Fundraiser Maddison Kirby (pictured) was on hand to meet some of the children and collect their cheque during a recent visit.
