“The team pulled out all the stops, and it was a wonderful, humbling experience that our girls will never forget” – special guest Juno stars in an enchanting band practice session telling the story of The Boy, the Mole, the Fox and the Horse

Families were transported into an enchanting world of imagination during a specially curated evening of music and storytelling.

The band practice session was themed around The Boy, the Mole, the Fox and the Horse – a book celebrating the themes of kindness, friendship, hope and love through the conversations of four unlikely animal friends – and organised by East Anglia’s Children’s Hospices (EACH). It was for families being supported at The Treehouse, in Ipswich.

The story was read by EACH Play Specialist Hailey Allen with musical accompaniment by Music Therapist Ray Travasso.

Ray was also joined by a harpist and cellist, while a beautiful white horse was brought to the side of the building, for families to see and stroke.

Among those to attend was 15-year-old Ava Streatfield, who has Cerebral Palsy. She was joined by mum Debbie and sisters Ruby and Millie.

“It was an incredible, magical night,” said Debbie.

“We love band practice, and this session was particularly special, as it brought a wonderful story to life. It’s not often you see a real horse at The Treehouse!

“It’s not just about the music, either – it’s a complete sensory experience, with lots to see, feel, smell and taste.

“The team pulled out all the stops, and it was a wonderful, humbling experience that our girls will never forget.”

The Boy, the Mole, the Fox and the Horse was written and illustrated by artist and author Charlie Mackesy, who has close links to Suffolk. It was animated for the BBC and shown on Christmas Day 2022.

Ray described the evening as “extremely special” and added: “Families were immersed in the story thanks to music, movement, mindfulness breathing, cake and an unforgettable appearance from horse Juno.

“Everyone, including staff and volunteers, got involved through lots of sensory activities, and thanks go to everyone who made it such a beautiful evening.”

EACH hosts monthly band practice evenings, and each one revolves around a unique theme, carefully tailored to cater to the needs of children and young people. The inclusive nature of the event ensures all service users, siblings and their families can enjoy the fun together.
