“Families shared their experiences of hospital stays, operations and treatment, as well as exchanging wellness tips, and these connections were beautiful to witness and be part of” – children enjoy meeting Dippy during a trip to ROARR!

Families enjoyed a roar-some time during a fun-packed trip to a dinosaur theme park in Norfolk.

The visit was organised by East Anglia’s Children’s Hospices (EACH) for children and families being supported at The Nook.

Seven families including 17 children, ranging in age from one to 12, enjoyed a day at ROARR!

They were joined by EACH Play Specialist Heidi Foster, and the day also served as the annual outing for EACH’s Monday Meet-Up group.

Among the highlights, the children enjoyed meeting ROARR! mascot Dippy.

“I’d asked Dippy to make an extra fuss of one of the children as he was celebrating his fourth birthday,” said Heidi.

“All the families seemed to have a lovely time exploring all that the park had to offer.

“Families shared their experiences of hospital stays, operations and treatment, as well as exchanging wellness tips, and these connections were beautiful to witness and be part of.”

Heidi was supported by two volunteers who helped the day run smoothly.

The Monday Meet-Up is a special support group that helps parents and carers connect with others facing similar challenges.

It provides a welcoming space to share experiences, swap advice and enjoy time with people who understand their daily lives.

The sessions are designed for parents and carers, as well as babies, pre-school children and young people unable to access school, and activities include sensory play, storytelling and themed experiences. Families can also occasionally access ad hoc music sessions with The Nook’s Music Therapist, Jane Rous-Milligan.

“Our Monday Meet-Ups offer parents and carers understanding, reassurance and the chance to connect with people facing similar experiences,” said Heidi.

“Caring for a child with complex needs can sometimes feel isolating, so having a safe, welcoming environment where families can relax, talk openly and support one another can make a huge difference.

“It’s wonderful to see the friendships and support networks that grow from these sessions.”
