A popular fly-fishing competition hooked an impressive £3,235 for East Anglia’s Children’s Hospices (EACH) – taking the total raised over 11 years to £23,000.
The annual event, organised by friends Steve Lambert and Steve Coote, saw 30 kind-hearted anglers cast off for a day of friendly competition, fundraising and community spirit in South Elmham, near Harleston.
Steve said he was proud to see the event continue to reel in support year after year.
“It’s great that the event has got bigger and bigger,” he said.
“In the first year, we managed to raise just shy of £450, but this time we managed £3,235.
“It’s a fantastic amount of money, and people are very generous and supportive. We’re also extremely grateful to Jack Walpole and his family for their continued support and for hosting us at South Elmham Lakes.
“It’s become a bit of a tradition, and even though it’s a lot of work, mainly in terms of getting draw prizes, I enjoy organising things and seeing everyone having a great time on the day.
“Everyone gets in the spirit, and we never lose sight of the reasons we’re doing it – to raise as much as possible for EACH.”
Conditions were ideal, with anglers making the most of their time on the water.
The winner, Richard Le, landed 14 fish, including the biggest catch of the day – a 6lb brown trout. The second-placed angler caught ten fish.
In addition to entry fees, Steve also organised a raffle, selling 1,400 tickets, while generous donations helped boost the total. One participant, Michael Cracknell, went above and beyond with a £500 contribution.
Steve was inspired to begin fundraising following a personal family experience. His sister’s son died in 1994 when he was just 11 years old.
“He would have been in his 40s now, and we still miss him terribly,” he said.
“My sister, June, lived in the Netherlands, and there wasn’t such a thing as a children’s hospice.
“It wouldn’t have changed the outcome, but my sister and nephew would undoubtedly have benefited from the care and support somewhere like EACH provides.
“That’s why it’s such a special charity and one I’m very happy and proud to raise funds for.”
EACH volunteer John Skoyles attended the event, which concluded with anglers enjoying a well-earned barbecue together.
“We’re incredibly grateful to both Steves and everyone involved for their continued support,” said Ali Butler, EACH’s Senior Community Fundraiser for Suffolk.
“The total raised over the years is absolutely outstanding, and every penny helps us provide care and support to children and families across East Anglia.
“We’re so thankful to everyone who took part and donated.”
