“It’s an incredible day of fun for the whole family and seeing and hearing so many smiles and giggles is heartwarming” – mud, sweat and cheers as Piglet Junior Hog raises £48,000 for EACH

Nearly 1,300 fundraisers got gloriously muddy as they tackled a wacky obstacle course and raised £48,000 for East Anglia’s Children’s Hospices (EACH).

The family-friendly Piglet Junior Hog took place at Wantisden Hall, near Woodbridge, on Sunday.

Children aged eight and over, along with family and friends, faced more than 30 obstacles along a fun-filled 4km course.

They crawled through tunnels, splashed through muddy water, clambered over hay bales and embraced plenty of mud while helping raise vital funds for EACH.

Participants were encouraged to raise at least £40 each, and the total raised is expected to increase further as sponsorship money continues to roll in.

“It went fantastically well, and to see so many people come together for a mass participation event, all looking resplendent in their branded T-shirts, was a very special feeling,” said EACH Senior Events Fundraiser Ellie Nevard.

“We were delighted with the amount raised, but it’s also about spreading the word and raising awareness, which is where events of this nature come into their own and make such a tangible difference.

“It’s an incredible day of fun for the whole family and seeing and hearing so many smiles and giggles is heartwarming.

“There are so many funny moments, and I love witnessing children’s reactions when their parents get splattered in mud – it’s like all their dreams have come true!

“Everyone gets in the spirit, and no-one takes themselves too seriously. I hope everyone had fun and feels proud of themselves. It’s a special event.”

After crossing the finish line, families and friends relaxed together and enjoyed the festival atmosphere while celebrating their muddy achievements.

Among those taking part was Jason Wilkins, whose family has a special connection with EACH.

Jason completed the course alongside his son, Ned, and teammates from Framlingham Town Youth Football Club.

The family wanted to show their support after Jason’s son, Isaac, who had the genetic muscle-wasting condition Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA), received end-of-life care from EACH over Christmas 2009. He was just five months old when he died in March 2010. Together, the team raised an impressive £700.

Ellie thanked everyone who helped make the day such a success, including the participants, volunteers and supporters.

She also thanked main sponsor TuffStuff, Toilets+, which provided portable toilets free of charge, and Collins Skip Hire, which donated two skips for use as part of one of the course’s obstacles.

For adults keen to take on an even bigger challenge, the popular Whole Hog, featuring more than 30 obstacles over approximately five miles, and Boss Hog, an even tougher seven-mile course with more than 40 obstacles, are taking place in October. Anyone signing up is encouraged to raise funds to support EACH’s work.

EACH is always pleased to hear from anyone interested in volunteering at future events. For more information, email events@each.org.uk
