A charity shop worker who first got the bug while helping as a volunteer has described the role as a “perfect pick-me-up”.
Elaine Osborne is now sales assistant at the East Anglia’s Children’s Hospices (EACH) shop in Meredith Road, Ipswich.
However, she started as a volunteer for the charity, joining the team shortly after retiring from full-time work five years ago.
She has nothing but positive memories and would recommend it to others.
Elaine was speaking during EACH’s ‘Don’t pass by, give volunteering a try!’ campaign, which is shining a light on the various roles available – from serving customers to sorting and pricing donations, dressing windows, steaming clothes, testing electrical equipment and listing items on eBay.
Posters and flyers are on display in every shop, while volunteer stories are being shared online and via social media.
“It’s immensely satisfying to volunteer for a charity like EACH,” said Elaine.
“There are so many great and worthy charities out there but I feel particularly strongly about this one because it helps children.
“I recommend volunteering all the time because it makes you feel good, whatever your situation.
“We all have our own reasons for getting involved, whether it’s because we need company or have particular health issues.
“It lifts you and it’s a lovely feeling to go home and know you’ve done good.
“It’s also great spending time with such lovely people, because we enjoy each other’s company and carry each other along. It’s the perfect pick-me-up.”
Other roles volunteers might like to consider include being a key holder, listing and sending books and being a driver’s mate, heading out to distribute goods, including collecting and dropping off furniture.
“I started as a volunteer five years ago when I retired from full-time work,” said Elaine.
“Then, about a year ago, I was taken on as a sales assistant.
“I love it and enjoy doing something positive for my community.
“It’s also about the people you meet and friendships you make. You feel part of your own little community.
“I particularly like interacting with customers, so enjoy using the till.
“I like putting things out on display and also love sorting through donations.
“However, there really is something for everyone.”
EACH has 48 shops across the region, in addition to its busy Retail Distribution Centre, in Thetford.
