“Aside from the fun, there are such therapeutic and wellbeing benefits and our hospice is a place where people feel welcome, connect with others and develop friendships” – families enjoy a night of Spanish culture at The Treehouse

Families swapped Suffolk for Spain during an evening of fun, music and tasty tapas at The Treehouse.

The themed session, organised by East Anglia’s Children’s Hospices (EACH), followed hot on the heels of last month’s popular Scottish night.

This time, families were transported into the Mediterranean sunshine, where highlights included special versions of the songs Tequila and Spanish Eyes.

They decorated maracas, tucked into tapas and the hospice care floor was adorned with red and yellow Spanish flags.

Using sign language, they also learnt some Spanish words.

“We had a fantastic time and it was an incredible sensory experience, featuring lots of the sights, sounds, smells and tastes we associate with Spain,” said EACH Music Therapist Ray Travasso.

“Everyone enjoyed themselves and it was wonderful to look around the room and see so many happy, smiling faces.

“We like trying different things and, aside from the fun, there are such therapeutic and wellbeing benefits.

“It gives people a sense of belonging and our hospice is a place where people feel welcome, connect with others and develop friendships.

“They feel listened to and part of something, while enjoying a joyful and positive experience. It’s very important.”

EACH hosts monthly band practice sessions for children and families receiving care and support.

They usually have a theme and future plans include nights centred around friendship, world music and sunshine.

The Spanish session took place on 7th March and Ray was joined by staff including Art Therapist Sandra Smith and Spanish-speaking Nurse Marleen Dermaut.
