A creative volunteer is gaining valuable real-world experience while using her talents to support a charity’s growing eBay operation.
Mayisha Hekim started helping at the East Anglia’s Children’s Hospices (EACH) shop in Felixstowe Road, Ipswich, in May, after completing her Level 3 Hairdressing qualification.
The 19-year-old now spares two afternoons a week to help research, photograph and list donated items for sale online – helping maximise the value of donated items while raising vital funds to support the charity’s work.
“I didn’t know a massive amount about EACH before starting here, but it’s certainly a very good cause,” said Mayisha, who first came across the charity while providing haircuts during a college-organised event at The Treehouse.
“I wanted to give something back, and volunteering gives me the opportunity to gain real-world experience while building my CV.
“I’ve found it interesting, and I particularly like learning new skills and things I didn’t know before.
“I’ve enjoyed researching the items we list and getting all the details right. It’s satisfying to put the time and effort into something and then see the results.”
One memorable project involved transforming a donation of assorted seashells into an eye-catching display that helped maximise their value before they were listed online.
Mayisha carefully arranged them on a canvas to create an attractive display before photographing them for sale.
“I enjoyed laying it all out for the photos, and it was a relief to get it finished,” she said.
“I was pleased the listing raised more than I expected – significantly more than we would have received if the shells had been sold in the shop.”
As well as supporting EACH, Mayisha says volunteering has helped her develop valuable communication and workplace skills, while also building her confidence.
“It’s giving me practical experience that will hopefully benefit me throughout my career. It’s also been a great way to meet lovely new people,” she said.
“I’d recommend volunteering to anyone. In fact, I’ve already encouraged a friend to get involved in the future.
“My advice to anyone considering volunteering is simple. It’s about seeing what you’re good at and not worrying about giving it a go.”
Shop manager Andy Bennett says he is grateful for the ‘time, energy and positivity’ Mayisha brings during her four-hour shifts every Monday and Friday afternoon.
“She’s been a fantastic addition to the team and shown real enthusiasm, whether researching unusual items, creating attractive listings or making sure every detail is accurate,” he said.
“The seashell display perfectly shows how a little creativity and care can make a real difference to the amount we raise for local children and families.
“It’s wonderful to see a young person gaining confidence and valuable workplace skills while helping us support local children and families.
“Volunteers like Mayisha are vital to what we do, and we’re incredibly grateful for the time, energy and positivity she brings to the team.”
