Young bakers rose to the occasion by holding a special cake sale in support of two worthy causes.
Around 35 pre-school children from Meadow Lane Nursery, in St Ives, turned into mini master chefs and raised £242.10, to be split between East Anglia’s Children’s Hospices (EACH) and Woodgreen Pets Charity.
The children, aged three and four and from the nursery’s Dahlia class, came up with the fundraising idea themselves during discussions about graduation celebrations.
Dahlia Class Educator Molly Corney said: “The children had spent several weeks planning birthday parties through role play, creating invitations, discussing decorations, cakes and party food.
“One child suddenly suggested a cake sale, and the idea immediately captured everyone’s imagination.
“When we asked what they wanted to do with the money, they unanimously chose to give it to charity. After learning about several great causes and voting, they decided to support both EACH and Woodgreen.
“The children wanted to help families going through difficult times as well as animals needing care, safety and a loving home.”
The youngsters planned every aspect of the event, exploring recipe books, creating shopping lists, designing posters and deciding how much to charge.
They made apple tarts, fruit kebabs and heart-shaped biscuits, while families also donated cakes and treats.
On the day, the children helped run the stall, welcomed visitors, handled money and explained why they were fundraising.
Dahlia class Educator Katie Williams added: “The project became so much more than a bake sale. It helped develop the children’s communication, maths, creativity, teamwork and problem-solving skills while showing them they can make a positive difference in their community, even at a young age.
“We’re incredibly proud of the kindness, empathy and determination they showed throughout.”
The children were later presented with certificates in recognition of their efforts.
“We’re so grateful to the children and staff at Meadow Lane Nursery for their fantastic support,” said Victoria Goldsmith, EACH’s Senior Community Fundraiser for Cambridgeshire and West Essex.
“It was wonderful to meet them, thank them personally and present their certificates. Every pound raised helps us continue providing vital care and support to children and families across Cambridgeshire and East Anglia.”
