“These events are so important for our families and provide an excellent opportunity to build relationships, while also creating special memories” – music students take the lead during a seaside-themed band practice session

Families enjoyed a musical trip to the seaside during a special student-led band practice session. The event featured colourful costumes, props, songs and stories and was organised by East Anglia’s Children’s Hospices (EACH) at The Treehouse.

EACH hosts monthly band practice evenings – engaging, interactive after-school music therapy sessions – and this one was extra special as it was led by music students from Suffolk One.

“They did a fabulous job,” said EACH Music Therapist Ray Travasso, who met with the group beforehand and was on hand to guide them on the day. “The theme was ‘a day at the beach’ and the students chose songs and stories accordingly. These included Riptide, by Vance Joy, Cherry Wine, by Hozier, Under the Sea, from Disney film The Little Mermaid, and children’s favourite A Sailor went to Sea.

“The experience of leading the event provided a unique and memorable opportunity for them to understand the work of staff and volunteers at The Treehouse, while also helping them gain an insight into music therapy.

“A special thanks goes to the students and head of music at Suffolk One, Lois Hinton, for giving up their precious time and helping support our work.”

EACH’s band practice sessions revolve around a unique theme and feature sensory-adapted songs and content. Each one is carefully tailored to cater to the needs of children and young people. This one took place on Thursday, 2nd May.

“Lots of children and families came along, and we were supported by many volunteers, who helped decorate the care floor and make it look stunning,” added Ray. “We were also joined by Luna, our beautiful pets as therapy (PAT) dog. These events are so important for our families and provide an excellent opportunity for us to build relationships, while also creating special memories.”
