Youngsters cracked clues, solved puzzles and completed challenges during a fun-packed visit to Norwich’s Escape Hunt.
The event was organised by East Anglia’s Children’s Hospices (EACH) for siblings being supported at The Nook.
They were either bereaved or those with a brother or sister receiving care.
Nine children aged ten and above took part and they split into groups to tackle two escape rooms – the Doctor Who-themed ‘A Dalek Awakens’ and ‘Blackbeard’s Treasure’.
The children were joined by three members of staff – Play Specialist Clare Oakley, Child and Family Practitioner Rachel Lenton and Nurse Jo Nicholl.
Jo was helping at a sibling event for the first time, having joined EACH last September.
“What a wonderful group of children,” she said.
“Giving them that time together, to reassure them they’re not alone, was genuinely heartwarming.
“Until you’re in their situation, it’s impossible to understand how they feel.
“There were lots of giggles, everyone enjoyed themselves and it was lovely that the quiet, nervous ones at the start didn’t stop talking by the end!
“It made me appreciate how important the ‘bigger picture’ is and seeing the smiles on their faces made everything worthwhile.
“I hope I get the opportunity to help again.”
Escape Hunt is in Castle Quarter and, after their afternoon of fun, the siblings enjoyed a McDonald’s in Chantry Place.
Clare added: “The children were full of excitement and anticipation and worked well as a team, with everyone helping each other.
“They had lots of fun and were determined to find the clues and solve the puzzles.
“If you’re struggling, you’re allowed to ring a bell and ask for help.
“However, the children banned me from doing that – they were determined to escape on their own!
“We’re very thankful to Escape Hunt, who offered a generous discount for every child. It really was a great and memorable visit.”
