“Hopefully it raises a smile, encourages interest and sparks a thirst for more knowledge and greater understanding of the amazing world not far from our doorsteps” – Tales from the Pond is a new children’s book written to raise funds for EACH

A children’s book packed with rhymes, illustrations, photos and colouring-in pages has been written to raise funds for East Anglia’s Children’s Hospices (EACH).

Tales from the Pond is the handiwork of Sandra Edgell and features stories about characters including Freda, Noah, Dizzy, Violet, Si and Hubert.

Illustrated by friend Jan Kerrison, it is the third time the pair have collaborated, with their previous books being Tales from the Point – Blakeney Point and Tales from the Garden – A Norfolk Garden.

The glossy A4 publication is available via Amazon, and Sandra is in the process of seeking independent bookshops, garden centres and businesses that might be interested in stocking it. Aimed at children aged three upwards, it costs £6.99 and all profits will go to EACH.

“Hopefully it raises a smile, encourages interest and sparks a thirst for more knowledge and greater understanding of the amazing world not far from our doorsteps,” said the 70-year-old, who lives in Blofield, just east of Norwich.

“I’d love to think it builds on children’s natural curiosity to find out more about nature and how to care for it.

“It’s nice to touch, feel and look at, and hopefully it appeals to youngsters of all ages, from four upwards.

“Each tale is written in rhyme, alongside a colourful crayon illustration, making it a fun way to learn more about nature and the creatures who live in garden and wildlife ponds.

“It can be enjoyed together as a shared storytelling experience or children can read independently and discover facts about pond life, while letting their imagination loose on how the characters spend their days in and around the pond.”

The idea for writing children’s books started after Sandra, who is now retired but previously worked as a surgery manager for the NHS, enjoyed a trip to Blakeney Point.

Her first two books were originally produced for family and friends with any profits being donated to East Anglian charity Break, but now she has chosen to support EACH.

“My mum always donated to children’s charities when she was alive, and that’s encouraged me to do the same with our books,” said Sandra.

“EACH is such a great and special cause to support, and I hope to raise as much as possible through sales of all three books.”

Tales from the Pond also features photos taken by husband Roger, renowned local wildlife photographer Roger Tidman and Jan’s husband, John.

“I stayed at the Blakeney Point Watch House, many moons ago,” she said.

“It was magical and such a privilege to be so close to nature. That’s where the idea for the children’s picture books started to develop.

Ellie Miller, EACH’s Senior Community Fundraiser for Norfolk, said: “It looks such a delightful book, and we’re over the moon Sandra has chosen to support EACH.”

“We’re very grateful and feel sure it will prove popular with young children and families, while also raising funds to help us continue our vital work.”
