Talented musicians hit the right note after delivering a showstopping performance and raising more than £1,800 for East Anglia’s Children’s Hospices (EACH).
Mike and The Detours – a five-piece band consisting of singer Mike Richardson, Bob Leach, Ken Scullard, Nigel Fear and Mick Radford – rolled back the years during an unforgettable night at the Abbey Lounge Cambridge United Supporters’ Club.
More than 130 people bought tickets and danced the night away, leading to a special cheque presentation when Mike met EACH Senior Community Fundraiser Victoria Goldsmith at Milton recently.
“It was a fabulous night, and the venue was jam-packed with friends and fellow musicians who travelled from as far as Brighton, Derby and Stoke,” said Mike, 79.
“We’re a group of guys who have been on the city’s music scene for years.
“We still love performing, but we’re not in it for the money anymore. Instead, we’d rather raise funds for charity and find that much more fun, pleasurable and fulfilling.
“EACH is a very worthwhile cause that I’ve always admired. After doing some research, finding out more and telling my bandmates, everyone agreed it was a fantastic charity to support.”
Mike and The Detours play music from the 1950s, 60s and 70s, ranging from rock and blues to soul and Motown.
The gig took place on Friday, 14th November, and, as well as buying tickets, £414 was raised from a raffle. Generous prizes were donated by friends, Tesco and Scotsdales Garden Centre, bringing the grand total from the evening to £1,872.
Friday evenings are charity nights at the Abbey Lounge Cambridge United Supporters’ Club, with no charge for hiring the venue.
