“It’s so heartening that in times of adversity, people pull together and show community spirit. We’re extremely grateful” – staff, volunteers, the public and neighbouring businesses come to the rescue of EACH’s flood-hit Leiston shop

The public have been hailed for their patience and support after flooding forced the closure of a popular East Anglia’s Children’s Hospices (EACH) shop.

The charity’s Leiston store reopened this week but was forced to shut for eight days while a major clear-up operation took place.

The flood was discovered first thing on 10th January, with water from a burst pipe having been spewing overnight.

It led to the ground-floor ceiling collapsing, damaging stock and leaving a “huge amount” of water across the entire shop.

“It was a significant flood, although thankfully, and most importantly, everyone was OK,” said EACH Area Manager Emma Manning.

“It led to a major clear-up operation, and we’re so thankful for the way people rallied round to support us.

“In addition to our brilliant retail and maintenance colleagues, volunteers from other shops travelled from far and wide to lend a hand. This quick turnaround wouldn’t have been possible otherwise.

“Others from the community also stepped in, and I’d particularly like to thank the public for their support, understanding and patience. The day after it happened, one kind lady even handed over £40.

“The local business community has been fantastic, too. The water spread onto the pavement and staff from the Co-op next door put grit down, to stop people slipping. They also lent us storage containers to help keep stock dry.

“Coopers were also great, lending us tools, supplies and equipment, so we could quickly get to grips with things the day after.

“It’s so heartening that in times of adversity, people pull together and show their community spirit. We’re extremely grateful.”

In addition to damaging stock, the shop’s electrics had to be repaired and a new fire alarm installed. There is still a small amount of redecoration to complete, when one of the walls has completely dried out.
