“The opportunity to learn new skills, spend time outdoors and enjoy something completely different is incredibly valuable for the children and families we support”- siblings saddle-up for a day at the Newmarket Pony Academy

Siblings enjoyed learning about horses and riding ponies during a memorable visit to the Newmarket Pony Academy.

The day, held at the British Racing School, was organised for 12 youngsters supported by East Anglia’s Children’s Hospices (EACH). They have either experienced bereavement or have a brother or sister receiving care at one of EACH’s bases in Cambridgeshire, Norfolk and Suffolk.

The action-packed visit gave children the opportunity to learn about caring for horses, develop new skills and build confidence while enjoying time together in a fun and supportive environment.

In the morning, the children met ponies Jack, Henry and Sammy, grooming them, plaiting their manes and tails, oiling their hooves and helping to clean their stables. They also learned how to tack up the ponies with bridles and saddles before practising how to lead them safely around the yard.

Once fully equipped with riding boots, helmets and body protectors, the children took part in eagerly-anticipating riding sessions.

Fay Wilde-Newell, EACH’s Family Support Practitioner at Milton, said: “It was wonderful to see the children having so much fun and gaining confidence throughout the day.

“For some, it was their first time around horses and there were naturally a few nerves to begin with, but everyone embraced the experience and thoroughly enjoyed themselves.

“The opportunity to learn new skills, spend time outdoors and enjoy something completely different is incredibly valuable for the children and families we support.

“It was especially lovely to see one young person who first attended Newmarket Pony Academy through an EACH sibling day and returned as a volunteer, showing the lasting impact these experiences can have.”

Thanks to the sunny weather, the rides were able to take place outdoors, giving the children the added excitement of seeing racehorses stabled on site.

“We’re hugely grateful to the staff and volunteers at the Newmarket Pony Academy for making the day such a success,” added Fay.

“They always go above and beyond to ensure the children have an enjoyable and memorable experience, and they make everything so easy for our team.

“It’s something we look forward to offering every year and it’s always incredibly popular, with places filling quickly and a waiting list each time.

“Days like this provide children with the chance to make happy memories, meet others with similar experiences and simply enjoy being children.”
