“Everyone mixed together and got on beautifully. The children made new friends, enjoyed each other’s company and were so kind and empathetic” – siblings get in the Christmas spirit during a special day at The Nook

Youngsters came together for a day of festive fun including arts, crafts, games and a special characterisation activity.

The event was organised by East Anglia’s Children’s Hospices (EACH) for children who are either bereaved or have a brother or sister receiving care at The Nook.

Eleven youngsters came along, ranging in age from seven to 15, and the day was led by EACH Child and Family Practitioner Rachel Thomas.

Highlights included an activity where the children had to imagine picking from a wardrobe of costumes and think of themselves as a character with special powers.

They were asked what they would change if they had a magic wand, and some of the responses related to their own personal family situations.

“There were some very profound, considered and moving answers, based on their own individual emotions,” said Rachel.

“The children then had an opportunity to make that character using arts and crafts and stick them on a giant landscape picture.

“Overall, it was a lovely day with a strong community feel and lots of Christmas spirit.

“Everyone mixed together and got on beautifully. The children made new friends, enjoyed each other’s company and were so kind and empathetic.

“We ended with a circle of reflection, where I asked them to give me one word to describe their day.

“Everyone was so positive, and days like this are very important, in terms of giving the children a space to be themselves, to do whatever they wanted to do.”

Other highlights included a therapeutic activity related to movement and an opportunity to decorate crackers, stockings and stained glass windows, before finishing with Christmas games.

“It was a day packed with fun and creativity,” added Rachel.

“The children were brilliant, and I loved the way they took the lead when we did games in the afternoon.

“I had some ideas, but they came up with their own, and it was lovely giving them flexibility to set the agenda.

“I must also thank our four amazing volunteers – Jackie Creighton, Theresa English, Caroline Church and Nichola Lines.

“Once again, they gave up their day to support us, and it wouldn’t have been possible without them.”

EACH runs sibling days during the school holidays, allowing youngsters to come together, have fun and make friends in a safe environment. This one took place on Monday, 23rd December.
