The new manager of a popular charity shop believes volunteering can be a perfect springboard into paid employment.
Sally Cleary, who previously spent three decades in a global sales role, has taken the reins at the East Anglia’s Children’s Hospices (EACH) store in Beccles.
She has been appointed interim shop manager after six months at the charity’s Wymondham shop – first as a volunteer and then Sales Assistant.
She describes her initial decision to lend a hand as “life-changing” and would encourage others to give it a go.
“Volunteers play such a crucial role and, from my experiences, it’s definitely something I’d recommend,” said Sally.
“For me, it’s no exaggeration to say it was life-changing and one of the best things I ever did.
“It gives you so much fulfilment, is sociable and you become part of a community.
“It’s the most amazing feeling, being around similarly focused and determined people, and we’re one big team.
“Volunteers are a crucial part of that and it can open doors, especially for those looking for paid employment or a career in retail.”
Sally has always been an admirer of EACH’s work, mainly because one of her best friends was a palliative care nurse at the charity’s former Quidenham hospice.
Those feelings prompted her to start volunteering after taking early retirement last year.
“I love everything about EACH,” said Sally, who lives in Tacolneston.
“Working for such an amazing charity gives me a real buzz and I feel more passionate than ever after a recent tour of The Nook.
“It was so emotional, impactful and inspiring and a reminder of why we’re all here.
“For many years, I had a very stressful global sales role in recruitment.
“I absolutely loved it but this is so different.
“We’re still trying to make as much money as possible, of course, but this time it’s not about big profits or bonuses – it’s about directly helping children and families. What better motivation could anyone want?
“It makes me more determined than ever to hit targets because I know the impact it’ll have if we don’t.”
Sally says any would-be volunteers are welcome to pop in for a chat, email her via Sally.Cleary@each.org.uk or call the Beccles shop on 01502 441021.
“It’s a gorgeous, phenomenal shop with lots of space,” she said.
“I’m excited to be in this new role and can’t wait to meet and welcome more volunteers. Together, we can help make a difference.”
EACH’s Beccles shop only opened in March. Parents who received vital bereavement support from the charity were on hand to cut the ribbon.
