An excited seven-year-old received a belated birthday present after being invited to officially open a new charity shop in Aldeburgh.
Roman Bone, who celebrated his big day on Monday, cut the ribbon at the new East Anglia’s Children’s Hospices (EACH) store in High Street.
He was joined by mum Jodie and invited to do the honours as he has chronic myeloid leukaemia and receives care from EACH at The Treehouse, in Ipswich.
He has benefited from hydrotherapy and music therapy and been a regular visitor to the hospice since April, having first been referred six months ago.
“Roman was so excited when I told him about the shop opening,” said Jodie, who lives in Leiston.
“He couldn’t wait, and we were pleased to be asked because we’re incredibly grateful for the care and support we receive from EACH. It’s been so helpful.
“Everyone has been friendly and welcoming, and Roman loves visiting The Treehouse.
“He adores music therapy, and I haven’t seen him smile as much for a very long time.
“Hydrotherapy has also been extremely beneficial, helping ease the pain in his legs and muscles.”
Roman was diagnosed with his condition after a blood test in May 2025.
Through EACH, he and Jodie recently enjoyed an evening of fun, laughter and unforgettable animal encounters at Colchester Zoo’s annual Dream Night. The exclusive evening was specially organised for children and families representing hospices and charities across the region.
EACH’s new Aldeburgh shop is based in a former off-licence and becomes the charity’s 57th across the region, including others in nearby Framlingham, Leiston, Saxmundham and Woodbridge. It is one of 17 in Suffolk.
“It was a pleasure to welcome Roman and Jodie to officially open our new shop,” said manager Sara Thomas.
“Roman did a fantastic job cutting the ribbon, and it was wonderful to celebrate this special occasion with a family that knows first-hand the difference EACH’s care and support can make.
“We look forward to becoming part of the local community and helping raise vital funds for families across East Anglia.”
The team would love to hear from anyone interested in volunteering in the shop. To find out more or register your interest, pop in for a chat or email VolunteerServices@each.org.uk
