“Last year was the third time we’d organised the match and we raised a record-breaking £2,740, which took the overall total beyond £5,000” – popular fixture for EACH is a way of remembering football-mad Dan

Kind-hearted footballers are pulling on their boots in memory of a sports-mad youngster.

The contest is being held at Narborough Sports and Social Club to raise funds for East Anglia’s Children’s Hospices (EACH).

It will feature players from Narborough and Swaffham and is being organised by Dillon Walker, whose brother, Dan, received care from EACH at its former Quidenham base.

He had Down’s Syndrome, as well as various heart complications, and died in 2019, aged 24.

“It’s got bigger and bigger and become a fantastic, memorable event,” said Kay Walker, Dan and Dillon’s mum.

“Last year was the third time we’d organised the match and we raised a record-breaking £2,740, which took the overall total beyond £5,000.

“The players are great and the public turn out in force to support us.

“We get a decent crowd along and then enjoy a barbecue and raffle together. The clubhouse is always packed.

“It’s a lovely social event that raises important funds but is also our special way of remembering Dan.”

This year’s match is taking place on Saturday, 13th April (kick-off 2.30pm) and there will be live music from Sidewalk from 7.30pm.

It is being sponsored by Trackstar Racing, in King’s Lynn, Jack Garrods MOT and Vehicle Repairs, in Swaffham, Home and Garden Outlet Store, in Clenchwarton, Carers Elite, in Downham Market, and AIR Accountancy Services, in Swaffham.

Dan was a popular and well-known character at Quidenham.

He was passionate about football and a huge Manchester United fan.

He was able to travel with dad Clive and Dillon to Old Trafford, the Red Devils’ home, as well as watching Norwich City at Carrow Road.

“Dan loved watching his brother play football and some of the lads playing in the match are the same ones he used to watch and follow,” added Kay.

“It was one of his favourite things to do and that’s why organising this match has become such an important thing for Dillon.

“It’s very special and personal to him and a way of remembering his brother.”
