“My main motivation was to support EACH. I didn’t even contemplate the fact we might win!” – Peter and Barbara receive a ‘lovely and welcome surprise’ after scooping £2,000 on the Local Hospice Lottery

Jubilant lottery winners admitted it was a “bolt from the blue” after hitting the jackpot and winning £2,000.

Peter and Barbara Slater scooped their prize on the Local Hospice Lottery – a weekly draw providing financial support to adult and children’s hospices across Great Britain, including East Anglia’s Children’s Hospices (EACH).

They have been playing for eight years and are pleased to endorse a scheme that supports vital care in the community.

“It was a bolt from the blue, but certainly a very lovely and welcome surprise,” said Barbara.

“I’d forgotten we even played the lottery, to be honest.

“I set things up eight years ago, and my main motivation was just to support EACH. I didn’t even contemplate the fact we might win one day!

“It was a very welcome phone call, and it meant I could treat my three sisters to lunch when we met up recently.”

Barbara, 75, and Peter, 82, have five children, nine grandchildren and five great-grandchildren, and the couple live in Horstead.

They recently took part in a special presentation at EACH’s Café 98, within its shop in Hoveton, Norfolk, where, in addition to receiving their winnings, they also handed over a cheque for £200 to EACH Community Fundraiser Megan Kemp.

“It’s such a great spot, and their coffee is simply the best,” added Barbara.

“We also shop there and donate items whenever we can. My daughter wanted to part with a bag full of shoes the other day, some of them almost brand new, and I took them straight to EACH.

“We like doing what we can to help, and I’m a big admirer of EACH’s work.

“Bringing up children can be challenging enough, let alone caring for youngsters with complex health conditions.

“In addition, I worked with adults with special needs, and I appreciate how important it is for parents and carers to be supported.”

Playing the Local Hospice Lottery in support of EACH gives the public a chance to win £2,000 every week. There are 310 other cash prizes, in addition to a rollover that can reach up to £25,000.

Players are automatically entered into Super Draws, which take place every March, June, September and December and feature an additional guaranteed top prize of £10,000.
