“They were immersed in sound, resonances and vibrations, which are felt holistically, both emotionally and physically. This experience was grounding and holding” – parents and carers enjoy a well-earned pamper evening at The Nook

Parents and carers enjoyed a soothing evening of relaxation while getting a “sound hug” from a specialist piece of musical equipment.

The well-earned pamper evening was organised by East Anglia’s Children’s Hospices (EACH) at The Nook, in Framingham Earl.

It was for mums, dads and family members who are either bereaved or have a child receiving care.

Eleven people came along to enjoy the ambient atmosphere.

Four Center Parcs therapists were on hand to offer a nail file and polish, as well as scalp, neck and shoulder massages. Parents also had the chance to make bath bombs with help from three representatives from Lush Cosmetics Norwich.

Another of the highlights was the chance to lay in a sound cradle.

The instrument is made from layers of beech and birch veneer, bonded together to create a semi-circular shape and used in music therapy sessions.

It can be laid, stood vertically to provide a ‘sound shower’ or turned upside down like a dome.

On each side are 18 strings, which are tuned to a monochord. When played, they resonate the entire instrument – a resonance felt intensely throughout the body, providing a sense of safety and containment.

“Parents and carers enjoyed a sound cradle and sound bath experience as part of the pamper evening,” said Jane Rous-Milligan, Music Therapist at The Nook.

“They were immersed in sound, resonances and vibrations, which are felt holistically, both emotionally and physically. This experience was grounding and holding.

“A sound hug encourages peacefulness, connecting with feelings that can be        marginalised in everyday life, and promotes a sense of stillness. It was a magical experience seeing parents and carers being nurtured in this way.

“We had such lovely feedback afterwards and it was great to hear parents describe the evening as well-earned ‘me time’ – something that can be hard to achieve.

“One described it as an ‘absolutely wonderful evening’ and ‘such a meaningful environment’. Another said they felt ‘thoroughly spoilt’ and another commented on the ‘informal, relaxed atmosphere’.

“We’re so pleased they came away feeling rested and positive and, in addition to thanking those who came along, we were also grateful to the representatives from Centre Parcs and Lush Cosmetics Norwich.”

Two volunteers were on hand to lend their support, serving tea, coffee and cake and helping the event run smoothly.

EACH Play Specialist Clare Oakley, who helped organise the evening, said: “It was amazing and magical, to see the mums and dads taking a well-earned break.

“It was emotional and one told me she hadn’t felt so relaxed for as long as she could remember.

“Another couple told me how lovely it was to step off the convey-belt for just one night and focus on each other, rather than having to think about everything else.

“One of the nicest things is seeing mums and dads meet, link together and make connections. These evenings give them a safe environment to do that, in a place where they feel comfortable.”
