Runners pushed themselves to the limit to raise vital funds for a leading children’s charity.
Nine hardy souls completed the Larking Gowen Ipswich Half-Marathon for East Anglia’s Children’s Hospices (EACH) – in the process raising nearly £4,000.
Among those to tackle the 13.1 miles, starting and finishing at Ipswich Town Football Club, was EACH Nurse Cathryn Johnson, who works at The Treehouse.
She says the thought of the children she cares for spurred her on when the going got tough.
“I used to run lots and have done half-marathons in the past, but the last one was seven years ago,” said mum-of-three Cathryn, who lives in Brantham.
“Training was hard, but I was thrilled to finish and not too worried about my time. The most important thing was completing the distance.
“In my job, I see the difference this money makes every single day.
“We wouldn’t be able to function without such incredible public support, and I found it very inspiring being on the start line with so many other people, lots of whom were raising money for their own great causes and very personal reasons.
“When the going got tough, I thought about all the children I care for during my working life, and that gave me the inspiration and motivation to carry on.
“It was a reminder of who I was doing it for and why, and it made me start running again when I’d slowed to a walk.”
Cathryn, who was cheered on by colleagues from the care team, raised £250 and finished in a time of two hours and 50 minutes.
She started working at The Treehouse six months ago and loves working alongside children and families receiving care and support from EACH.
“There are times when it’s emotional and challenging, but I absolutely love my job and feel privileged to do something I’m so passionate about,” said the 38-year-old.
“I enjoy interacting with the children, meeting families and trying my best to make a difference.
“As I say, I see the difference fundraising makes, and that’s why I was so keen to sign up. I also wanted to test myself and take on a challenge.
“Now I’ve recovered, I can say I enjoyed it! I felt proud of myself afterwards and have already signed up for next year.
“I’d encourage anyone to give it a go, even if it means stepping out of their comfort zone and pushing themselves.”
Another EACH runner to complete the distance, taking in Holywell Park, Ipswich waterfront and running alongside the River Orwell, was Jason Keeley, who raised £355.
He said: “It was a fantastic experience, and the atmosphere was electric.
“The crowds along the route were incredibly supportive, which helped keep me going, and I was thrilled to complete it in under two and a half hours.
“It was tough, but knowing I was running in support of such a special cause made all the difference.
“I’ve supported EACH for several years, because the work it does is truly inspiring. The care and support it provides for children and families in some of the most challenging times is invaluable, and it’s an honour to be able to contribute in any way I can.”
