Norwich City heroes took time away from the pitch to sprinkle some festive magic and meet families being supported by East Anglia’s Children’s Hospices (EACH).
Captain Kenny McLean was joined by Liam Gibbs, Jack Stacey, Ben Chrisene and Sporting Director Ben Knapper, along with women’s duo Millie Daviss and Sarah Quantrill, during a visit to The Nook on Wednesday afternoon.
After being given a tour of the hospice, they met children and families on the care floor – delivering sacks of presents, signing autographs and posing for photographs. They also presented a hamper of festive goodies to EACH staff.
Scottish midfielder McLean was making his second trip to The Nook, in Framingham Earl, having previously been part of last year’s Christmas visit.
He said: “It was amazing seeing the staff, parents and children again.
“I’ve visited the hospice a couple of times now, and it’s important for our players to see and understand some of the work that goes on there.
“We had a tour and met plenty of staff, before spending time with parents and children, who were all very excited to see us.
“A few of the children were talking to me about our performances this season – they were very honest!
“However, they were all in good spirits, and it was really rewarding to see smiles on faces at this time of year.”
Among the children in attendance was nine-year-old Tilly Riches, who has kidney disease and underwent a transplant in August.
Mum Terri said: “Tilly loved it and was stunned when Kenny remembered meeting her during his last trip to The Nook.
“He asked about her treatment and was excited when we told him about the transplant. He said it was amazing news.
“All the players were amazing, kind and lovely. Tilly has her ups and downs, but this certainly put a big smile on her face.”
Both the players and families were able to tuck into a spread of food, including cookies, cake and a yule log.
Laura Southcott, EACH’s Senior Corporate Fundraiser for Norfolk, said: “It was a truly magical afternoon, and we’re extremely grateful to Norwich City.
“The players were so friendly, engaging and approachable and such wonderful ambassadors for their club.
“They had time for everyone, sharing lots of laughs and positive conversations, and I know it’s something the families enjoyed enormously.
“There were smiles all round, and they created memories that will last forever.”
