“It was great to get an insight into what EACH does and what has to be raised to continue supporting local families” – more than 50 anglers vie for glory as Angela’s latest fundraising fishing match reels in more than £4,000

East Anglia’s Children’s Hospices (EACH) hooked a bumper cheque for more than £4,000 following a popular fishing match in Suffolk.

The event was organised by Angela Baldry and took place at the Stonham Barns lakes, in Stonham Aspal.

More than 50 anglers challenged for honours, and good weights were caught throughout the hard-fought, six-hour contest.

The event raised £4,015, which, when added to money raised from the previous two matches, took the overall total to an impressive £8,446.

Angela said: “It was a great day, and everyone seemed to enjoy themselves.

“The weather was a bit cooler, windy and overcast, but at least it stayed dry.

“Fifty-two competitors took part, and, considering the amount of people fishing, some good weights were caught.”

Drinks and homemade sausage rolls were handed out midway through, and, at the end, cupcakes, rock cakes and more sausage rolls were sold to help boost the fundraising total.

Volunteer Tony Golding was on hand to speak about EACH, which has a base at The Treehouse, in Ipswich.

“It was great to get an insight into what EACH does and what has to be raised to continue supporting local families,” said Angela.

“Tony then had the arduous job of drawing the winning raffle tickets, which took a while because we had so much local support.

“My thanks go to all who donated prizes and bought raffle tickets. Everyone was so generous.”

The winner of the Old Lake competition was Paul Elvin, with 57lb 4oz of fish. He was followed by Nick Marriot (53lb 3oz) and John Sheppard (31lb 1oz).

John Dale took the honours on the New Lake, with 91lb 10oz. Steve Elvin (75lb 4oz) was second and Steve Ling (49lb 6oz) third.

The competition took place on Saturday, 2nd August.
