Kind-hearted members of a movement that aims to educate and stimulate mainly retired members of the community joined forces to raise £770 for East Anglia’s Children’s Hospices (EACH).
A giant cheque from u3a Bury St Edmunds was handed to EACH volunteer John Skoyles during a special presentation at The Apex.
It followed an inspiring talk he gave to members back in July.
Mr Skoyles (centre), a retired sales director, received the cheque from u3a Bury St Edmunds Treasurer Mike Burt (left) and Talks Organiser Rainaldo O’Meara (right).
He said: “I was grateful for the invitation to speak about EACH and the work that goes on at its three hospices, including The Treehouse, in Ipswich.
“These are very special places – fun, happy and homely environments for children and a dependable, supportive and restful space for their families.
“It was also a golden opportunity to tell members about the money that needs to be raised every year.
“EACH relies on voluntary donations for most of its income and this year needs to raise £8 million from donations and fundraising activities and £9.8 million in retail income. It only receives 15% of its income from the government, county councils and the NHS.
“That’s why donations such as this make such a difference and are so appreciated.
“On behalf of everyone at EACH, I’d like to say a heartfelt thank you to everyone at u3a Bury St Edmunds.”
u3a Bury St Edmunds organises free monthly talks for members on a variety of topics.
It is part of a nationwide organisation that provides opportunities for semi-retired and retired people to discover new interests and hobbies, knowledge and skills and to socialise with one another. Many new friendships are formed along the way.
The cheque presentation took place on Tuesday (18th November).
