A proud publican has hailed villagers’ community spirit after customers raised £1,300 for East Anglia’s Children’s Hospices (EACH).
Louise Griffiths, who runs The Kings Head, in North Lopham, organised a grand raffle, and the eagerly-awaited draw tied in with a visit from Father Christmas.
Villagers clubbed together to contribute a selection of prizes, including vouchers, hampers, wine, chocolates and a painting by a local artist.
The pub’s brewery and suppliers also showed their support by making donations, and raffle ticket strips were snapped up for £5 apiece.
Father Christmas then joined customers for the draw, having been towed in a sleigh from the other end of the village. He had his own grotto in the pub’s bottom bar.
“It’s the most beautiful village, full of the kindest people, and we feel so blessed,” said Louise, who runs the pub with husband Martin.
“There’s an incredibly strong sense of community spirit, and our customers were so supportive, in terms of donating prizes and buying tickets.
“The night of the draw was crazy – the pub was rammed – and we were absolutely thrilled to raise as much as we did.”
Louise and Martin took over The Kings Head in June 2023. Prior to that, Louise was a funeral director for more than 20 years.
“I know from my previous career that hospices do an amazing job,” she said.
“The staff have my upmost respect, and it’s a local charity at the heart of our community.
“It’s also one we know lots about, as one of our regulars works in EACH’s Attleborough shop. We feel a connection and were pleased to show our support.
“In addition, Christmas is all about children, and that’s why it was only right we raised funds for this very special cause.”
