“We have fun in a laidback atmosphere and there’s always plenty of hilarity, but underneath there’s an important message” – families get in the mood for summer during a sunshine-themed band practice session

Families geared up for the summer break with a sunshine-themed musical extravaganza at The Treehouse.

The special band practice session was for children, young people and families receiving care and support from East Anglia’s Children’s Hospices (EACH).

Among the highlights were songs including Walking on Sunshine, Here Comes the Sun and Summertime.

The session was led by Music Therapist Ray Travasso and 11 families came along to EACH’s Ipswich base.

Ray said: “We had another fun evening together.

“These sessions have a musical theme but they’re not just about music.

“It’s more about engaging and connecting with families, inspiring them and giving them the opportunity to meet others by trying something new.

“They don’t just come to watch a musical performance. They’re all performers and we’re in a band together, as a community.

“We have fun in a laidback atmosphere and there’s always plenty of hilarity, but underneath there’s an important message.”

Other musical highlights included Sweet Caroline and a ‘mash-up’ of Don’t Worry Be Happy and If You’re Happy and You Know It.

Families also played with beach balls, tucked into delicious food and waved scarves for a sensory rendition of Over the Rainbow.

Ray was joined by talented young musicians who helped bring the session to life.

“Noah, Layo, Benjamin and Lilianna were fantastic and I feel it’s important to include members of the community, especially young musicians,” added Ray.

“Aside from the music, I hope it encourages them to find out more about hospice care – perhaps going on to fundraise or even work in a healthcare setting.

“Being a musician isn’t necessarily about getting on stage and being perfect. It’s about engaging and connecting with people, which is what we strive to do in these sessions.”

EACH hosts monthly band practice evenings and they usually have a theme. After a summer break, the next one is in September.
