“I witnessed some incredible moments during the evening, and treasured memories were created” – families are treated to an outdoor performance of Hamlet as part of Sutton Hoo’s Theatre in the Forest

Families had the chance to create treasured memories in a magical setting after being treated to an outdoor performance of Hamlet.

Three families being supported by East Anglia’s Children’s Hospices (EACH) at The Treehouse, in Ipswich, enjoyed a performance of Shakespeare’s classic under the stars at Sutton Hoo.

It was part of the National Trust site’s annual Theatre in the Forest event, in collaboration with Red Rose Chain.

The families received free tickets, in addition to ice creams, a goodie bag and backstage tour.

“We had an amazing time,” said Kelly Evans, EACH’s Groups and Events Co-ordinator at The Treehouse.

“Sutton Hoo have offered families some amazing experiences this year, from our Easter sibling day to supporting parents and carers in a creative workshop and now this incredible opportunity to experience some modern Shakespeare.

“We’re always well looked after, and they go above and beyond every time.

“Red Rose Chain were also so personable, giving families a backstage tour, merchandise goodie bag and interacting with them throughout.

“I witnessed some incredible moments during the evening, and treasured memories were created.

“It was fantastic and such a great opportunity for families who may not normally access something like this.

“We cannot thank the venue and theatre company enough for including us in this magical experience once again.”

Theatre in the Forest is famed for making Shakespeare accessible and fun for all, staying true to the text while injecting high energy, dance, music, colour and magic.

What started as two nights at Rendlesham Forest in 2000 has become one of the biggest and best-loved outdoor theatre events in Suffolk.

“It’s a joy for all of us at Red Rose Chain to be able to offer this experience to young people and their families who are benefitting from the care of EACH,” said Artistic Director Joanna Carrick.

“The actors and whole team really value this partnership – the location, the story and the magic of the evening provide a unique opportunity for us all to have an unforgettable experience.”

Josh Ward, Senior Visitor Experience Officer at National Trust Sutton Hoo, added: “Theatre in the Forest is a much-loved event here, and this year’s performance of Hamlet is even more special thanks to the amazing puppet, which is inspired by the famous Sutton Hoo helmet.

“We’re thrilled three families currently being supported by EACH were able to come in and enjoy the fun.”
