“They used colours that reminded them of their sibling and became very focused, producing something personal and unique” – decorating heart-shaped jigsaw puzzles is among the highlights of a Valentine’s Day-themed get-together at The Nook

Youngsters iced biscuits, decorated pizzas and designed heart-shaped jigsaw puzzles during a Valentine’s Day-themed get-together at The Nook.

The sibling day was for children who are either bereaved or have a brother or sister receiving care.

Organised by East Anglia’s Children’s Hospices (EACH), the day featured time for drawing and colouring, wordsearches and an animal-themed game.

The youngsters also designed their own Hama bead creations and spent time letting off steam on the hospice playground.

Fifteen children and young people attended, including two who were enjoying their first sibling day.

“We had a fantastic time together,” said Clare Oakley, EACH’s Groups and Events Co-ordinator at The Nook.

“One particularly poignant activity was designing heart-shaped jigsaw puzzles.

“The children spent time colouring and decorating them, and the idea was the puzzle represented their brother or sister.

“They used colours that reminded them of their sibling and became very focused, producing something personal and unique.

“Another highlight was decorating heart-shaped shortbread, using icing and sprinkles, and also sitting together at lunchtime, eating pizzas the children had decorated earlier in the day.”

Afternoon activities included a game using pom poms, blowing them along a track through a straw, and pushing marbles through a Lego maze.

The children also played a special heart-themed beetle drive game, using different coloured M&M’s.

“We run days like this during every school holiday, and it’s a great way to bring the siblings together,” added Clare.

“New friendships are forged, and it gives them an opportunity to spend time with other children in a similar situation.”
