“Young people are incredibly resilient, but they can find themselves struggling emotionally during times of great change” – Children’s Mental Health Week is a timely reminder of the wellbeing support provided by EACH

A national awareness campaign focusing on children’s mental health has been described as a perfect opportunity to discuss the wellbeing support provided by East Anglia’s Children’s Hospices (EACH).

Children’s Mental Health Week begins today and runs until Friday (3rd to 9th February), and this year’s theme is ‘Know yourself, Grow yourself’.

EACH’s wellbeing support is a fundamental part of the care provided at its hospices – not just for parents and carers but young siblings, too.

It runs groups and events throughout the year, and nearly all are geared for children and families, including sibling days in school holidays.

“There’s a whole raft of ways families can reach out to us,” said Jules Gibson-Cranch, EACH’s Locality Wellbeing Lead at The Treehouse.

“It’s not just about the lead child – it’s about the whole family, very much including siblings.

“Young people are incredibly resilient, but they can find themselves struggling emotionally during times of great change.

“Different children have different understandings, depending on their cognitive stages and ages.

“On the whole, the best people to support them are their parents and carers, along with other significant adults, like grandparents and teachers.

“However, there are times when children try to protect adults in their life, by not telling them how they feel.

“That’s very normal, but help and support is available through our locality wellbeing teams, and it’s a fundamental part of the care we provide.”

EACH’s specialist team offers a range of services that support the wellbeing of every child and family member, tailored towards their specific needs.

“If anyone wants to talk, they can ring our hospices at any time and speak to a member of staff,” added Jules.

“We can then talk through their concerns and signpost them to the various ways we offer support.”
