“Days like this give us an opportunity to unwind and create memories together. EACH is such an important lifeline and, as a family, we have nothing but positive things to say” – children, parents and grandparents enjoy a trip to the beach

Families being supported by a leading children’s hospice braved blustery conditions for a day of fun at the seaside.

The gathering took place at Felixstowe and was for children, siblings, parents and grandparents receiving care and support at The Treehouse, in Ipswich.

It was organised by East Anglia’s Children’s Hospices (EACH) and 11 families, plus staff and volunteers, based themselves at The Hut.

The facility, which has its own kitchen and accessible toilet, is especially for charity and community groups and proved a perfect place to shelter from the wind.

Among those to attend was Jodie Barden, who brought daughters Ella, 17, Chloe, 11, and Mia, six. Ella and Chloe have Cockayne syndrome.

“We had such a lovely day,” said Jodie.

“It’s so difficult finding something I can do with all my girls at the same time.

“Obviously, I want Mia to have fun during her school holiday but it also needs to be somewhere I can take Ella and Chloe.

“The beach day is perfect because they’re all happy and if Mia wants to go and play on the sand, there are people to help and make sure she’s safe. It wouldn’t be possible otherwise and I’m very grateful.”

Staff brought a hoist and hired a beach wheelchair, so children receiving care were able to dip their feet in the water.

Among those to get down to the shoreline and see the giant waves was Gracie Baldry, who has Cerebral Palsy.

She was there with her parents, sibling and nan Beverley Craven.

“We had such fun and I was pleased to be invited along,” said Beverley.

“As a nan, it’s so lovely being involved in things and everyone from EACH is so friendly and welcoming. I always feel included.

“Days like this give us an opportunity to unwind and create memories together. EACH is such an important lifeline and, as a family, we have nothing but positive things to say. Everyone does such a fantastic job.”

Families brought their own picnics but also enjoyed tea, coffee, soft drinks and snacks, including a huge selection of cakes.

As well as enjoying arts, crafts and games, including colouring pebbles from the beach, they also sang songs with Music Therapist Ray Travasso and learnt some new dance moves with Physiotherapist Lauren Messenger.

Play Specialist Hailey Allen, who organised the day, was delighted with the with it went.

“There’s no doubt the weather could have been kinder,” she said.

“However, no-one let it spoil their day and everyone got in the spirit, embraced it and enjoyed each other’s company.

“The beach day is one of the highlights of our busy calendar at The Treehouse.

“It’s a pleasure to be involved and a real joy to look around and see everyone relaxing, having fun and creating lasting memories. It’s always a special day.”

The beach day took place on Thursday, 22nd August.
