“The clock is ticking, with just a week before the deadline, so every vote is hugely appreciated. It could make all the difference” – Charlotte’s story is up for a coveted Smiley Charity Film Award

A powerful film showcasing the work of East Anglia’s Children’s Hospices (EACH) is in the running for an international Smiley Award.

Charlotte’s story is a nominee in the prestigious global contest, which celebrates films that raise awareness for charities and social causes.

Spirited Charlotte Freegard stars in the three-minute production, speaking about her experiences at The Treehouse, in Ipswich.

The 11-year-old, who has the rare genetic muscle disorder nemaline myopathy, has been receiving care for three years.

In the film, she speaks about the things she loves most about her time at the hospice, including music therapy, art, playing games and baking.

It shows her exploring the hospice garden, being pushed on a swing and an interview with EACH Care Assistant Jenny McClure.

The public are being encouraged to get voting by clicking here – and there are just a few days left, with the deadline looming next Wednesday (29th January).

The winner will be announced on 20th March – International Day of Happiness – and a ceremony will take place at The O2 in London.

Simon Hempsall, EACH’s Head of Marketing and Communications, said: “We’re incredibly proud of our film and delighted to be in the running for a Smiley Award.

“We’d love to win and would be so grateful to anyone who takes a moment to vote.

“The clock is ticking, with just a week before the deadline, so every vote is hugely appreciated. It could make all the difference.”

Charlotte’s story was produced in collaboration with experienced journalist and former long-serving BBC Look East reporter Kevin Burch.

It was released on YouTube last June, to coincide with the start of national Children’s Hospice Week.

“What’s particularly special is that this beautiful film was initiated by Charlotte,” added Simon.

“She told us she wanted to be part of a film, to show other children that a hospice isn’t a scary place. Instead, it’s somewhere they can have fun and create special memories.

“The fact we were able to work with her family to make this a reality was something we were very grateful for.

“Hopefully it helps many other children and families, both now and in the future.”

To coincide with the film launch, EACH also produced an accompanying written feature on Ed Sheeran superfan Charlotte. To read it, click here.
