A dedicated Senior Care Assistant says she feels proud and privileged to have clocked up 35 years working for East Anglia’s Children’s Hospices (EACH).
Sandra Holmes began her incredible career just a year after the charity’s Milton hospice opened in 1989.
Since then, she has cared for and supported countless children and families, and her extraordinary long service was celebrated during a special presentation when she received gifts including a bouquet of flowers from EACH Chief Executive Kevin Clements.
“It doesn’t feel like 35 years. In fact, my first day seems like yesterday,” said Sandra.
“It’s amazing to think how many children and families I’ve met along the way.
“Every one of them is different and unique, and, at times, it can be a sad and challenging job. However, it’s also incredibly rewarding and a real honour.
“I feel I’m on a journey with them, and in some cases, I’ve known the children since they were two or three, watching them grow until they’re ready to transition to adult services at the age of 18.
“It’s a real privilege that they allow me to become part of their lives and something I truly value.”
Sandra has been around longer than many of the buildings at Milton.
She has seen plenty of change and experienced countless memorable moments, including meeting The Prince and Princess of Wales during their visit in June 2022.
“As an organisation, EACH has grown enormously,” said Sandra, who says walking her dogs is a ‘coping strategy’ during tougher, more emotional times.
“The hospice is a truly amazing place, and, over the years, I feel I’ve developed alongside it, learning so many new skills.
“I’ve had numerous roles which has kept everything fresh and interesting.
“More recently, my job has included working with young people and helping them and their families when it comes to transitioning to adult services, at the age of 18.
“It’s something I love and feel extremely passionate about.
“I also feel lucky to be part of such a great team here at Milton.
“Everyone supports each other, and there’s always someone to talk to if I have a problem or something to discuss. It’s genuinely like one big family.”
