Football mascot Rowley the Warthog suffered a bruised ego but reflected with pride after racing into action and showing his support for East Anglia’s Children’s Hospices (EACH).
The St Neots FC mascot, better known as club stalwart Harry Fisher, took part in the Mascot Gold Cup at Wetherby Racecourse and raised nearly £650.
The money is being split between EACH and Ronald McDonald House UK.
Rowley was on course for a silver medal and sitting pretty in second place before an unexpected trip just yards from the finishing line.
“My pride was a little bruised, but the most important thing was that we managed to raise money for two amazing charities that mean a lot to many people at St Neots Town FC,” said Harry.
“It was a fantastic experience, lining up against so many other mascots from across the country.
“I turned up quite relaxed, but my competitive nature got the better of me, and as soon as the race started, I was in it to win it!
“I was flying and looked certain to secure a respectable second-place finish.
“Then, only yards from the finish line, I somehow managed to trip over one of my huge trotters and lost several places, as well as my costume head.”
A video of the race can be viewed here, and an EACH representative is set to collect the money at an upcoming home game at the Premier Plus Stadium.
“With the new season having just started, the exercise was great preparation for our home games when I’ll be running around meeting fans,” added Harry.
“Last season was Rowley’s first as St Neots Town FC’s mascot.
“There are so many great volunteers at the club, but, surprisingly, not many jumped at the opportunity to put on the warthog outfit.
“So, it was left to me, and it’s been great fun, although at 50 years old, I’m not sure how many mascot races I’ve got left in me!”
