Meet Nurse Rebecca Prowse

Nurse Rebecca Prowse says having the opportunity to make a genuine difference means she truly loves her role with East Anglia’s Children’s Hospices (EACH).

The 27-year-old joined the organisation in September 2021, having just completed her degree in Children’s Nursing.

As a newly-qualified member of the team, having gained experience across a variety of paediatric settings during her training, she was excited to get started.

Rebecca says she was attracted to the organisation because of its strong emphasis on family-centred care, reinforcing the importance of seeing the child within the context of their family and wider support network.

“EACH has a holistic approach to supporting children and young people with life-limiting conditions,” she said.

“These values aligned closely with my own, particularly around providing compassionate, individualised care and supporting families as a whole, and that’s what appealed to me about working here.

“Four years on, I still very much enjoy my time at EACH.

“Not everyone can say they love their job, but I genuinely do.

“I wouldn’t do it otherwise, and I’m currently working towards moving from a Band 5 to a Band 6 nurse.

“EACH is a setting where you truly learn as you go. Every day is a learning day, and I’ve felt encouraged to develop my skills and confidence through hands-on experience, reflection and working alongside knowledgeable and supportive colleagues.”

Although no two days are ever the same, Rebecca says her role involves providing holistic nursing care to children and young people, supporting their emotional and physical needs and working closely with families and the wider multidisciplinary team. This includes helping create a safe, nurturing environment.

“One of my favourite aspects of the job is being able to do things with children they may not otherwise get the opportunity to do – allowing them to feel safe, supported and able to just be children,” she said.

“Working for a charity is extremely fulfilling and rewarding.

“Knowing the care I provide contributes directly to improving the quality of life for children and their families gives real meaning to my work.

“It feels very different to work somewhere where the focus is so strongly on compassion, values and making a genuine difference.”

Rebecca, who is based at The Treehouse, says she also values the emphasis EACH places on Equity, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI). She says it helps create an environment where people from all backgrounds feel welcome, supported and respected.

“EACH promotes an inclusive and supportive culture, and I’ve always felt encouraged within my role,” she said.

“There’s an openness around learning, discussion and development, and this contributes to a positive working environment where staff feel valued and supported.”
