“Half of those who signed up were first-timers, so it’s great that word is spreading and more people are getting involved” – wet and muddy obstacles are the order of the day as popular Piglet event raises £38,000

Family and friends came together for some wacky fun while raising vital funds for East Anglia’s Children’s Hospices (EACH).

More than 1,150 people signed up for the charity’s Piglet Junior Hog, on Sunday – collectively raising a magnificent £38,000.

The event, returning for a fifth year, featured a host of wet and muddy obstacles and took place at Wantisden Hall, in Woodbridge.

Becky Redbond, Events Fundraising Manager, said: “It was another brilliant day and everyone had so much fun.

“Everything went smoothly and we were delighted by both the participation and fundraising numbers.

“Half of those who signed up were first-timers, so it’s great that word is spreading and more people are getting involved.

“As for the money raised, it’s an astonishing amount and will make such a difference to the children and families receiving our care and support.”

The family-friendly four-kilometre obstacle course was open to everyone over the age of eight and participants set off in separate waves.

Among the groups taking part was J-Jay’s Turtles, raising £1,155 as a thank you for the care J-Jay Wood received from EACH.

The ten-year-old was diagnosed with clear cell sarcoma in 2021 and defied the odds by living for another 18 months, before losing his battle in November 2022.

Mum Marie said: “We had a brilliant time and I’m so pleased we did it.

“Jenna-Mae, J-Jay’s sister, was able to join us this year as she’s now eight and she was so proud to finish.

“We hope to be able to run every year in memory of J-Jay and raise as much as we can for EACH.”

Becky added: “Families love Piglet and I can see why. It’s such fun and something everyone can get involved in, regardless of age or ability.

“There’s nothing quite like it in the area and the fact so many people come back year after year speaks volumes.

“We’re so grateful and I must thank all my colleagues and our loyal volunteers, who gave up their time to make this event possible.”

Meanwhile, there is still time to raise funds for EACH by signing up for one of two upcoming events at Wantisden Hall.

The Whole Hog (30+ obstacles and a five-mile course) and The Boss Hog (40+ obstacles and a seven-mile course) are taking place in October.
