“I overheard two recently bereaved siblings having a chat. Of course, it’s a horrible shared experience but great they’re able to talk about their feelings. That, in essence, is what these days are all about” – children enjoy a day of horse-related fun in Newmarket

Children saddled up for a day of horse play at Newmarket Pony Academy.

The event was organised for siblings being supported by East Anglia’s Children’s Hospices (EACH) at Milton, near Cambridge, and The Treehouse, in Ipswich.

They were either bereaved or those with a brother or sister receiving care.

Ten children took part and enjoyed a range of horse-related activities, including learning how to care for and groom a pony.

They also had the opportunity to ride ponies Delilah, Sammy, Henry and Chester.

EACH Family Support Practitioner Fay Wilde said: “The siblings had such a great time and took part in a series of fun races.

“When it came to completing the feedback form at the end, every single one of them said they’d love to go back.

“That speaks volumes, as does the fact we had a waiting list. It shows how popular our sibling days have become.

“I must also mention the amazing Newmarket Pony Academy staff – Anna, Kathryn, Grace and Sue.

“Their enthusiasm shone through and they gave the children a very special and memorable experience.

“We feel lucky to have developed such a lovely partnership and are already looking forward to going back.”

The group consisted of both boys and girls, all aged eight or above.

At the end of a fun-packed day, they proudly went home with a certificate and Easter egg.

“It’s lovely to hear the children talking about their brothers and sisters,” added Fay.

“It comes up naturally in conversation and I overheard two recently bereaved siblings having a chat.

“Of course, it’s a horrible shared experience but great they’re able to talk about their feelings. That, in essence, is what these days are all about.”

EACH organised an action-packed day of football fun during the February half-term, hosted by the Cambridge United Foundation. A special film was made to capture the magic of the day. To watch it, click here.
