Mum’s the word as stunning handmade quilt proves a hit in silent auction

A beautiful handmade quilt proved the star attraction in a silent auction to raise funds for EACH!

The promotion was organised at our shop, in St John’s Street, Bury St Edmunds.

Staff, volunteers and customers bid for a vast array of donated goods – writing down their offer and discretely popping the slip in a bucket – and then, at the end of the week, the top bidders paid for and collected their items.

In total, the auction raised an amazing £274.

The embroidered bed quilt, lovingly made by shop volunteer Trudie Spearman, received more than ten bids and eventually went for £67.

Other goodies up for grabs included an Alice in Wonderland canvas, a signed print from The Big Bang Theory, a giant pink shoe-shaped chair, a handmade adoptable bear with certificate, three brooches, a Toy Story bundle, a Radley handbag, a genuine leather handbag, a Beauty and The Beast bundle, a Nintendo DS Lite with Super Mario Bros game, a signed photo of actor Hugh Jackman and a Banksy Star Wars canvas.

Leanne McGeachin, Manager of our Bury St Edmunds shop, said: “It wasn’t something we’d done before but definitely something we’d do again.

“It was a bit of fun and we ended up raising a very decent amount of money.

“The whole idea came after one of my volunteers brought in a beautiful hand-embroidered quilt that she’d made over lockdown.

“We wondered how we could display it best, while making as much money as possible. Then we hit on the idea of trying it out in an auction.

“There were lots of bids for all the items and the amount raised was far more than I expected. It was an amazing, fantastic sum of money.”

The Bury shop is open from 9am to 4.30pm Monday to Friday and 9am to 5pm on Saturdays.

“We’re always on the lookout for more volunteers to pitch in and lend a hand,” added Leanne.

“Whatever time you have to offer, we’d love to hear from you because there are so many tasks to do, from sorting donations, labelling clothes and running the till to testing electrical goods and listing items on our thriving eBay shop.

“No previous experience is required and even just a couple of hours a week makes a big difference.”
