Volunteers Peter and Anne Herring love doing their bit to support EACH– and say the our great work “strikes a chord” with them.
The couple, who live in Frettenham, just outside Norwich, pitch in and help whenever possible, including being marshals at the Bubble Rush and Ride for Life events.
They have also helped with bucket collections and fundraising carol services and the release of their story comes during EACH’s fortnight-long campaign to recruit more fundraising volunteers. The drive to boost numbers is called #WeNeedYou – Be the difference, be an EACH Champion.
Peter says he enjoys being involved and, from personal experience, places huge value on the our work to support families and siblings.
“Our daughter, Sophie, was born with life-threatening conditions and had to have a number of operations,” said the 70-year-old.
“She spent several months in Great Ormond Street Hospital (GOSH).
“At the time, our son was four and, had it been available at the time, we all could have benefitted from the support offered to families and siblings by EACH.
“EACH does so much to support the whole family and that’s why it’s a charity that really resonates and strikes a chord with us.
“Of course, there are so many wonderful, worthy causes out there.
“All of them deserve support but rather than spreading ourselves too thinly, we prefer to concentrate on three – EACH, GOSH and Children with Cancer UK.
“It feels good to be able to help in some way.”
Peter, who used to work in insurance but is now retired, and nurse Anne, 62, decided to become EACH fundraisers when we were looking for a new facility to replace our former hospice at Quidenham.
The couple, who have four grandchildren, were looking for a worthy cause to support and joined the Norwich Friends Group.
“They’re a great bunch to work alongside and it’s something that gives us a great deal of satisfaction,” said Peter, who organised a successful art competition when he first got involved, nearly six years ago.
“It just feels right.
“It’s such a worthy cause and we feel very committed to helping in any way we can.
“We’ve loved every minute and would recommend it to anyone looking to volunteer for a special cause.
“It doesn’t matter if you don’t have much time to spare. Anything and everything helps and can make such a big difference.”
EACH is on the lookout for additional people to lend a hand and support its various fundraising activities.
This could be at its own events or those organised by a third party, corporate and community speaking or bucket and pot collections.
