Do you have time to lend a hand and volunteer at the EACH shop in Thetford?

Volunteers are needed to help out at a busy, forward-thinking charity shop.

East Anglia’s Children’s Hospices (EACH) is keen to hear from anyone interested in joining its team in Lime Kiln Lane, Thetford.

Extra help is urgently needed and shop manager Rose Fortescue says volunteering, even for just a couple of hours a week, is a great way to support the charity, which helps children and young people with life-threatening conditions across East Anglia.

She said: “The volunteers we have are a brilliant bunch, of different ages and backgrounds.

“They come in, work hard and are very passionate about what they do.

“However, we can always do with extra help.

“Volunteering is definitely something I’d recommend. As well as supporting a great cause, which is very rewarding, I know people get a lot back in return.

“They enjoy it, meet lots of new people and make new friends. There’s a strong social element to it and it gives structure and routine.”

Five volunteers currently help out at the shop, which is close to EACH’s Retail Distribution Centre in Brunel Way.

“Charity shops are very different nowadays and a lot of our customers are young people looking for a bargain,” added Rose, who has been working for EACH since September.

“They also come here because they care about things like fast fashion and recycling.

“Once upon a time, people saw charity shops as a glorified jumble sale but it’s definitely not like that now and we’re very proud of the way our shop looks.

“It’s busy and our footfall is high, even compared to town centre shops.

“People can park here and it helps that we’re on a retail park, so people can easily pop to more than one shop.

“Because of the parking, we also receive lots of donations.”

One of the current volunteers is Sharen Green, who works on Mondays and Wednesdays.

Sharen said: “I’ve only been here a few months, having previously worked in a different charity shop, but love it already.

“I like the atmosphere and am passionate about recycling, so appreciate what shops like this stand for.

“The staff and volunteers are very friendly, as are the customers. It’s a welcoming, professional environment and we work well as a team.

“Volunteering is something I’d recommend to anyone. It allows you to be sociable and feel valued, working in an environment where you feel safe and supported.”

Notes to Editors

“We’d heard about EACH and knew they were a fantastic cause that had supported families we knew, but we never thought we’d be the ones that needed them! Sadly, as fantastic as it is, their service will always be required, and every child who needs their help deserves to have it.”

  • We care for children and young people with life-threatening conditions across Cambridgeshire, Essex, Norfolk and Suffolk, and support their families.
  • We offer families flexibility and control over where they receive their care and support, including where their child dies – at home, in hospital or at one of three hospices at Milton (Cambridge), The Nook (Norfolk) and The Treehouse (Ipswich).
  • Our family-centred approach includes specialist nursing care, symptom management support, short breaks, wellbeing activities, therapies and counselling, all meeting the individual needs of the child, young person and whole family.
  • We are recognised as leaders in our field, with a reputation for excellence and commitment to pioneering development and innovation.
  • We rely on voluntary donations for the majority of our income and this year need to raise £5.5 million from fundraising and £5.4 million in income from our shops. The year before the pandemic we received just 16% of our total income from statutory sources.
