Clacton’s furniture showroom is a major plus-point for EACH in North Essex

Shop Manager Nigel Entwistle says he and his team are proud to help fly the flag for East Anglia’s Children’s Hospices (EACH) in North Essex.

Nigel runs the charity’s shop in North Road, Clacton, and it is one of five in the county, with two in Colchester – one on the High Street and one at Angora Park, Peartree Road – and others in Dovercourt and Halstead.

The Clacton shop is particularly popular because it stocks a range of good-quality furniture, from wardrobes and cupboards to sofas, beds, tables and chairs.

The team also accept and sell electrical items and ‘white goods’ like washing machines, dishwashers, fridges and freezers.

“We’re very proud of our shop,” said Nigel, 38.

“We’ve got plenty going for us but a lot of people might not realise we have a furniture showroom with a great selection at amazing prizes.

“We also collect furniture for free, which is a real plus-point.

“We stock such a variety and it’s of high quality. We inspect everything first and make sure soft furnishings like mattresses and sofas comply with fire regulations, in addition to being in a good, saleable condition.

“All labelling has to be correct and meet health and safety standards and we don’t tend to take dark-wood items, because they don’t sell. This means we would have to pay for their removal from the shop.”

The Clacton store has its own van, which is used to collect donations and deliver sold items to customers.

On Mondays and Wednesdays the team pick up furniture from towns across the Tendring district, like Clacton, Frinton, Walton and Harwich.

On Thursdays items are collected from the Ipswich area and on Fridays staff and volunteers do the rounds in Colchester.

The team are also looking to introduce deliveries on Saturdays.

Nigel, who lives in Clacton, has a team of 15 people working alongside him in the North Road shop. That tally includes a dozen volunteers, although they are always keen to hear from more people willing to lend a hand.

Among the staff members, pictured alongside the EACH van, are Van Driver and Sales Assistants Simon Turner (left) and Paul Baboolall.

Notes to Editors

“We’d heard about EACH and knew they were a fantastic cause that had supported families we knew, but we never thought we’d be the ones that needed them! Sadly, as fantastic as it is, their service will always be required, and every child who needs their help deserves to have it.”

  • We care for children and young people with life-threatening conditions across Cambridgeshire, Essex, Norfolk and Suffolk, and support their families.
  • We offer families flexibility and control over where they receive their care and support, including where their child dies – at home, in hospital or at one of three hospices at Milton (Cambridge), The Nook (Norfolk) and The Treehouse (Ipswich).
  • Our family-centred approach includes specialist nursing care, symptom management support, short breaks, wellbeing activities, therapies and counselling, all meeting the individual needs of the child, young person and whole family.
  • We are recognised as leaders in our field, with a reputation for excellence and commitment to pioneering development and innovation.
  • We rely on voluntary donations for the majority of our income and this year need to raise £5.5 million from fundraising and £5.4 million in income from our shops. The year before the pandemic we received just 16% of our total income from statutory sources.
  • EACH Royal Patron – Her Royal Highness The Duchess of Cambridge.
  • For more information about EACH, including forthcoming events and how you can help raise funds, visit or call the Norfolk fundraising office on 01508 500894.
