Daredevil Lyn Smart showed nerves of steel after plunging 10,000 feet from a plane and raising nearly £800 for EACH!
The 70-year-old, a former volunteer at our Halesworth shop, completed her epic fundraiser at GoSkydive, near Salisbury, Wiltshire.
In the process, she raised an incredible £1,539.40, with proceeds being split between two charities close to her heart – EACH and the Oxfordshire Animal Sanctuary.
“It was quite an emotional day but I can honestly say I wasn’t nervous. In fact, I was the only one staying calm,” said Lyn, who is still in close contact with Halesworth shop Sales Assistant Carol Bailey.
“I turned 70 in March and would have celebrated my golden wedding anniversary in June. I knew this was something I wanted to do and had made my mind up. The whole day was very exciting. When I first jumped out of the plane it was a strange feeling, like falling through cotton wool because all I could see was clouds. Then the parachute opened and we were gliding through the sky.
“It was amazing looking at the beautiful countryside and I could see as far as Poole, in Dorset, and the Isle of Wight. I’d definitely do it again and I’m proud of myself, especially when I look at my certificate. It was an absolutely fantastic experience and I was pleased to raise so much. I’m very grateful to everyone who so generously sponsored me or made a donation.”
Lyn, who was supported by 16 members of her family, including her two daughters and four grandchildren, volunteered in the Halesworth branch for three years and is still an avid EACH supporter, despite moving back to her native Oxfordshire in October 2019.
Halesworth Shop Manager Robert Holness said: “What an amazing thing to do. I have total admiration for her. Lyn was always a very hard working and popular member of our team and it’s lovely that she’s still supporting us, despite not living locally anymore. To do what she did took real courage and the fantastic amount she raised will make a real difference to the lives of the families we support.”
