10 Sept 09: STL Atlantic Coastal Challenge

Staff at Bury St Edmunds based STL Technologies are undertaking a mammoth three marathons in three days to raise funds for local charity East Anglia’s Children’s Hospice (EACH).

Nineteen members of STL’s staff will be heading down to Cornwall on 24th September where they will join 200 participants in the Atlantic Coastal Challenge (ACC) to trek over wild and rugged terrain involving steep climbs and descents, following the Atlantic coastal path from Padstow to Lands End. The team will walk, or even run, a whopping 78 miles over the three days.

For one member of the team, the preparation has been a challenge in its own right. Training and Development Manager Jon Pennington has lost a staggering three stone in his training to take part in the event. Jon said: "I’m fully expecting that it's going to hurt to cover the 78 miles, however, everyone participating has made lots of sacrifices for this challenge, it's for an incredibly worthy local charity and that's a great motivator."

The Atlantic Coastal Challenge is the latest fundraising effort from STL’s staff for EACH, the company’s charity of the year. Other individual and team fundraising initiatives include a parachute jump, car washes and cake baking. Human Resources Director John Lawrence said: "The ACC is a huge challenge for our staff to undertake and shows real commitment to the support of our chosen charity. The energy with which our employees have addressed the challenge is hugely impressive, which we hope will result in raising a significant amount of vital funds for East Anglia’s Children’s Hospices."

Carl Brooks, EACH corporate fundraiser, said: "STL Technologies have adopted EACH as their charity of the year and have already shown great support by hosting a number of fundraising events.

"The staff have shown great strength and determination in their training and we wish them every success in their forthcoming Atlantic Coastal Challenge."
